Solar Eclipse | Salt Lake City, Utah

May 20, 2012 brought much excitement to our little neck of the woods. A solar eclipse. I remember seeing the last solar eclipse in the 1990's. We made pinhole viewers in school. As a child I remember being mesmerized and really feeling like something important was happening.

I wanted the same thing for my kids. So, I got to work and created a couple of pinhole viewers from wrapping paper tubes, tin foil, tape, and a pin.

The kids loved it. Surprisingly Emm a lot more than Jothan. He took one look and was pretty much done, Emm tried every little trick to see the eclipse from the pinhole viewer to making tiny pinholes with her hands, and we even caught a glimpse of it through Camilla's dress. We can hear her saying, "See mine smiley face?" "Oh it's a smiley face!" My only regret was not having a macro lens to get a little bit closer to the actual image of the sun.

Such a fun evening, one we won't forget anytime soon.

Sisters | Daybreak, Utah Photography

All shot on a Nikon N80 with a 50mm 1.4 lens on Kodak Portra 400

I feel like I won the lottery when Vanessa called me to photograph her girls for the first time. That was, wow, I can't quite recall, three years ago I think. Vanessa's girls are absolutely the sweetest, most polite, funny, charming, lovely girls I have ever met. I love that they remember me, that they love for me to take their photographs, and that it is fun for them. I am even surprised that baby Shae gave me half smiles here and there, and believe me I worked my best jumping, peek a boo in me. (Usually Shae doesn't enjoy my company, so this was an amazing feat.)

If you would like me to capture your family in a similar way at Daybreak or elsewhere, drop me a line: kimorlandini@gmail.com, or call 801.654.5455, I can't wait to meet you.
