Let me start out by saying, no one is paying me* to tell you about how awesome the Power Pressure Cooker XL is. I saw you all got one for Christmas, or maybe you got it's friend Instant Pot. Either way they are both awesome and I use mine almost every single day. I thought I would start a simple, easy recipe series to let you know how I use my pressure cooker.

Let me dispel a couple of myths. You do not have to be making a "large meal" when you use your pressure cooker. This pot was made to cook things quickly and with a delicious effect with lots of flavor. It is kind of like the opposite of a crock pot, which I have seen people compare this too. They are not the same at all, but in the end, each give a delicious result using only one pot. So there you have it. If you don't have one yet, I highly suggest you get one, and do yourself a favor and get the XL, you will be grateful you did.

My favorite thing to make in my pressure cooker is rice. I have had the worst luck with rice. Being married to a Brasilian I need to have consistently good rice and since using the pressure cooker I do.

Here is how I roll when it comes to rice.

I plug in the pressure cooker and hit the rice button, 6 minutes pops up in the timing window, followed by "thinking lines" as I like to call them. I then put 1/4 cup olive oil into the bottom of the pan. I then add 3 teaspoons of salt and 3 cloves of pressed garlic. I sautee the garlic until it is fragrant and then I add 3 cups Basmati rice to the olive oil mixture. I continue to sautee the rice, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes giving a nice coating of olive oil. The rice almost turns white at this point. I then add 6 cups of water into the pot and I put the pressure cooker lid on. I make sure the valve is off so that it can start pressurizing. It takes about 5 minutes for the pot to fully pressurize, which is when you will see the the timer come back on to the window saying 6 minutes. Once the 6 minutes are up, the timer goes off, and I move the valve to depressurize the pressure cooker. Voila! Perfect rice every time. (If you like your rice a little less al dente, you can always push the Cook Time Selector after selecting rice, this lets you choose to cook the rice longer.)

I have this anxiety when it comes to blogging. I think that what happened to my family nearly five years ago was so traumatizing that I felt utterly exposed in so many areas that blogging could no longer be one of them. I recently came to the realization that my kids are almost to the age where they will be online and they will read my blog and they will have questions. I want to have answers. So here I am, trying to begin again.

This past week I have thought a lot about how grateful I am that I am still here, in this marriage, with Flavio. We were both hurt so much. It is so hard to come back from collapse and near divorce, but somehow we have managed. There has had to have been tremendous push and pull and give and take. More so than I ever imagined.

I was able to share with my best friends this week, how good it feels to finally be on the other side. A lot of times people talk about hitting rock bottom. We are finally on the top of the mountain we had to climb in order to get out of the bottom, and we are sledding down, and happy and laughing more.

Things are not perfect. Things are still very hard and challenging. Life is still life. But we are still doing it together. For that I am so happy.

The one where I tell you I am no longer religious.

It has been...awhile.

A long, long while.

I do not even know who I am anymore. I contemplate blogging. I sit down at the computer and I try really, really hard, but then anxiety takes over and blogging seems like the worst idea on the planet.

It has been almost a year and that makes me sad. They say there is a time and a season for everything, and I truly believe that. I have tried to be gentle with myself in that knowledge. The past year has been difficult, but also very fulfilling. I have learned so much about forgiveness, and growth, and knowledge. There is so much I want to share, and I hope to have the courage to do so with time.

I guess I will start with a big one. This one isn't easy for me on any front, but the more time that passes I have come to realize that I need to share.

A year ago this past January, after three years of blood, sweat, tears, heartache, heart pouring, soul searching, grasping, study, prayer, fasting, panic, pain, sorrow, anguish and any other word you can use to describe horror and torture, I made the decision to no longer weekly attend the religion I was born into. It was not until I made that very difficult decision that I began to feel peace, happiness, grace, love, strength and hope.

I know for many of my family, and friends this comes as a shock and for some even a disappointment. For me, it was really hard to slowly share my decisions. Many still do not know because it really isn't something you shout from the rooftops, "Hey guys! I am no longer religious, but I am still me and nothing has changed other than that." If it is really hard and takes you three months to actually talk to your spouse, and then another to get up the courage to talk to your children, imagine how much longer it takes to tell those outside of such a sacred circle.

My "leaving" has been wrought with mixed emotions. Mostly because our religious views can be so deeply set, and our belief systems come with consequences. A lot of people are genuinely worried about me. I think this is the hardest part of this entire situation. I do not like people feeling sorry for me, or having anyone worry about me. Please don't. Really. I am okay. I am so so so happy.

I may not be religious, but I still am and always have been a deeply, deeply spiritual person. In fact, that hasn't changed one bit, if anything, my spirituality has only grown deeper because of this. Believe it or not, I am a kinder person, a softer person, a much better person than I ever was when I was religious. I was even able to stop swearing. I actually love myself more deeply. I am more confident. I am more patient and loving and open. It is freeing and it is beautiful.

I recently opened up to a dear friend, and she helped me to explain it best. Religion for me is not right for me right now. I am not going to say that it will not ever be a part of my life again in the future, but for now, I feel confident in my decision.

I am Brave and Beautiful - a beauty movement that is sweeping the globe. Colbie Caillat started it with her recent song and video called TRY. My blogging friend Megan of Brassy Apple wanted to push this movement along and invited women from all over to share what they looked like without make up and I joined in!! Colbie's song says, "Take your make up off. Let your hair down... Look into the mirror at yourself, Do you like you? Cause I like you... "

Megan and her friend Cobi of Peacefrom6pieces have been the team behind this whole project. Their worldwide vision included creating their own video inspired by the song TRY. The talent of Robbins Creative made it possible for them to pull it off. You have to click play and see the beauty and bravery displayed and you might even recognize a few faces in there.

I, along with 101+ other blogging women from different backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, ages, shapes and sizes have decided to be Brave and Beautiful! You can join in this movement too by sharing what you look like without makeup on. You don't need a blog either! Just tag your photo with #IamBraveAndBeautiful on Instgram and search the hashtag to see who else has joined in. ALSO, if you tag it with a second hashtag - #ColbieTRY we just might be able to get Colbie Caillat's attention since she was the inspiration behind it all!

The day before the video shoot, I had photographed a wedding and I was very tired. I missed my kids, I wanted nothing more than to stay home and snuggle with them. Earlier in the week I had shared Megan and Cobi's project with my 8 year old daughter Emmaree. When I told Emm I probably wouldn't go to the video shoot, she did nothing but encourage me to go. "Mom! This is so important!" So, I went for her. I ended up having the most magical evening surrounded by friends and women whom I admire and look up to. I hope in some small way this project will show my daughters how beautiful and strong they are, especially in this world who would make them think and feel otherwise. I am grateful to be a small part of such a beautiful project.

Sitting here, as it is nearing midnight, tears are filling my eyes, as I am feeling...emotions. I feel happy, and I feel sad, I can breath, but most importantly, I feel ALIVE. Feelings I do not think I have felt for nearly three years. It has been almost impossible to feel anything but tired, anxious and depressed. It wasn't until last Thursday that I finally discovered why. I was on the wrong antidepressant. As in, oh. so. very. wrong.

Making the switch has been incredible. I am no longer sleeping almost all day, I am not eating every single feeling, and I can feel every range of emotions, both good and bad, and happy and sad and I am relishing in every single moment. I was able to go outside yesterday and ENJOY my family, I went shopping, on a bike ride and even tried to Rip Stick! Something I haven't been physically able to do. It was like there has been a wall around anything that I enjoyed. If I would sit down to work, leave the house to play with my family or blog, I would be attacked by anxiety, a virtual wall would surround my immediate self and I would freeze. The only place that felt safe was my bed. It has been awful. It has been so very sad.

Inside my heart and mind I knew what was happening. It was as if I could see from the outside that I was frozen, and I screamed and yelled at this girl to get up and just do it. Be brave...but she couldn't. It was not until last week that I could finally move past the virtual walls around this girl and FREE her. I cry as I write this. I cannot fully tell you how much this change means to me. It is as if I have been dead for three years, and I have been given sweet life again! I am so so so thankful for the health problems that got me to finally go into my doctor and ask for a change. I am thankful my doctor was busy so that I could see a new doctor and she took the time to LISTEN to me, to hear my cries and to offer support in the form of a listening ear, and a willingness to FIX me...not just guess.

I have me back. With that comes ALL of me...even the blogging me. I am SO happy guys. I am SO excited to be back. I have so so so so so much to give, so many many stories to tell. Get ready.

In fact, you will probably go home and tell your mom and dad about the crazy lady that came into work today. You will probably laugh about me and tell your folks about how out of control my kids were (they were), but I will remember you as one of three people that helped me make it through today, because I needed your kindness more than ever before.

You see Tanner, what the lady standing behind me in line didn't know was that I was at your store to buy scriptures for my daughter who is turning 8 next week. What this lady did not know was that I let my kids run around so that the scriptures would still be a surprise for her on her special day. What she didn't know is that my kids have really long names and when you told me that the names were too long to be engraved on the cover, I almost cried right then and there, because what this huffy puffy lady didn't know is that I was having a really terrible day.

You see, I had to wake my daughter up at 8 a.m. after she had gone to bed at 2 a.m. See, she has never been a good sleeper, and unless she has some warm body to help her fall asleep, it won't happen, and last night it didn't happen. Camilla had an appointment with the doctor because she has been sick for two weeks. I had to sit with Camilla on the dirty bathroom floor at the doctor's office for two hours trying to get her to go to the bathroom in a cup. There was crying and weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, and a fair share from Camilla as well. What this lady didn't know is that there was a fear Camilla may have a serious problem (She doesn't thank heavens.) but at that moment as I was trying so hard to get her to go potty that is all I cared about was getting her last test done so we would know. See, I had to drive 30 minutes home just so that I could get half an ounce of pee between three bathroom trips just so that I could turn around and drive that tiny amount of pee 30 minutes back to the doctor's office where we spent another hour waiting for test results. Remember how Camilla had already woken early and had cried for 2 hours? This extra hour was almost more than she could bear.

After her appointment I had to go to the store to pick up a medication for Camilla. A medication that may or may not help her and her issue...so that took us another hour, in that hour she cried and screamed and was so tired that we almost didn't make it out alive, but somehow we did. At least the people in Target didn't look at me and glare at me the way the huffy puffy lady did.
Walking into Deseret Book (a store for LDS members where they can buy spiritual clothing, books, scriptures, etc...) should have been a reprieve. I asked Jothan to watch my girls for me so that I could buy the scriptures really fast (and I was really fast!) before Emmaree noticed. But then this lady got behind me losing her shee because I was stumped on how to engrave my daughter's REALLY long name onto her scriptures. I really put this lady out so much that she decided to walk the 50 yards across the store to the other checkout.

Thanks for your patience with me Tanner. Especially after the lady left and the old man came in...and nearly scolded my children in front of my already tear filled eyes. When he put his hand out to stop my little girl from running after her sister, I lost it.
What this man didn't know is that last week I had a miscarriage. Of course, how could he know that? No one knew, except very close friends, my husband. Not even my children knew why I was on bed rest for a handful of days. They wondered why I was crying all the time, of course, but I didn't want them to know, and I still don't want them to know, so please don't tell them Tanner. What this old man didn't know was that my testimony of the gospel has been shaken and stirred and tried the last three years more than my little heart can manage, and last week I was praying my brains out and hoping beyond hope that this baby wasn't gone, that somehow my faith and will would align with God's.

What this old man did not know is that sometimes the last place I want to be is somewhere that reminds me how far I feel from my Heavenly Father. What this man didn't know is that his actions made me really question why I would want to be associated with people like him and the huffy puffy lady before him. I am trying to remember though Tanner that it is not the people. It is never the people...it is the gospel.
Tanner, thanks for letting me check out as quickly as possible so that I could remove myself from the presence of this man as quickly as possible. Thank you for being so kind to me even after you probably heard my very upset phone call to my husband, distraught because the names wouldn't fit, and because huffy puffy and old man had treated me so unkindly. Thank you for pretending not to hear my overly loud swear words because the only people I wanted to hear them were huffy and old man.

Thanks for pretending I wasn't crying when I finally figured out the engraving and thank you for ignoring my sadness when you told me that the engraving would be an hour and that I would have to come back later and that I would have to drive 40 minutes back to pick up the books because, as you know Tanner, my kids were losing it, and so was I.

I appreciate you.

Much Love,

Kim

P.S. Tanner, after I left your station, I decided to go upstairs and peruse the fabric (with my crazy kids) and your other co-worker was so so nice to me and laughed and giggled at my story of the horrible customers. Tanner, you will NEVER believe that after I spent 5 minutes upstairs and headed out to my car, who was parked next to me! Blue shirted huffy puffy was to my immediate right and old man was parked in front of me. We all left the store at the same exact moment. I cannot believe that my children ruined their day so much, and they were in such a hurry that somehow we all made it out at the same time.
Well the results are in!

This was me trying to express with all of my might. As you can see in the photos I can still express myself, but my muscles are not over working like you can see in the before photos. I am especially happy with the almost non existent wrinkling on my upper forehead.

I tried very hard to pay close attention to how I felt after my last treatment. Around day 2 my forehead area started to feel really "heavy" meaning I was very aware of it. Full effects of the procedure took place around day 10. The area on my forehead where I had JUVÉDERM® was not sensitive at all, but my lips were sensitive for about three days. Both are very subtle and I love the results.

I would definitely recommend BOTOX® and JUVÉDERM® and plan to do both again in the future.
For four whole hours, I was free of depression, stress, guilt, worry, STRESS, and every other little bitty thing that keeps me down. I was able to stay dressed an entire day. I was able to smile, LAUGH, B R E A T H E.

I basked in it. I kept breathing in, pinching myself. It was as if the weight of the entire world was off of my shoulders and I could feel ME.

I am not sure why I was given the trial of depression, of anxiety...but for whatever reason I was, and I long for it always. It was a reprieve of nearly years of heaviness. It is not something I can just turn on and off, oh how I wish I could!

I hope for a day when I no longer have to be tormented by this excruciating weight...but if I must, I will continue to hope for another day like Tuesday afternoon. The day when the sun shone, and I could pierce past this world of sorrow and sadness and grief, and see my beautiful soul.
When I first decided to have Elase Medical Spas give me BOTOX® , I never thought I would love it so much that I would want to do it again, but I did!

This time I took my awesome brother Marcus along to help capture it all for you. Marcus also happens to be one of my photography students, and he did an amazing job, so again, many thanks Marcus from me and from Elase Medical Spas.

Isn't Elase so beautiful? Every time I go to Elase it feels like, well a trip to the spa! It feels like home. Everything is so fresh and clean and every single employee is so friendly. My favorite is walking in, and I hear, "Hi Kim!" It is almost like a 2013 version of Cheers, except I am Norm.

Here I am ready to consult with Shari, my injector.

Shari is model gorgeous, and the nicest and smartest woman you will ever ever meet. I just adore her. Here we are consulting about what I hope to accomplish. My first visit I was so nervous that I asked for the bare minimum (which I loved) here I am saying, "Give me what you got!" (With a little more proper English.)

After discussing what I wanted, we compared to what we did the first time, and decided to go about twice as much on my upper forehead as we did the first time, and to hit my "grouch lines" as I call them, right between they eyes.

I also have this wicked awesome scar on my forehead from where my 5 or 6 year old self went head first into the handlebars of a three wheeler when we were snow tubing with my family.

On my first visit, Shari and I discussed using JUVÉDERM® to fill in that little area of my forehead. This is where we began.

Here Shari is putting the JUVÉDERM® in with the tiniest needle ever. (The needles she uses are the same size as an insulin needle. The needle on the left is the one she uses, the needle on the right is the size the JUVÉDERM® comes in.) it did not hurt in the slightest.

Shari was just ooohing and awwing and I couldn't wait to see for myself. Even my brother was impressed with how JUVÉDERM® just pumped out that little scar.

While nothing can be done about the lighter discoloration of the scar except for makeup, you can see here how the divot of the scar is virtually gone.

Me in love with the results of the JUVÉDERM®...my face looks so gross this close up.

Onto my BOTOX® before and after. My grouch lines are above and my worry lines below. Shari says my muscles are really strong, so it took a bit of BOTOX® to freeze them up.

A little prep.

I wanted to pay VERY close attention to how it FELT to have BOTOX®. I wanted to be able to describe it to you, and the best thing Shari and I could come up with is that, at least for me, it doesn't hurt, but feels more like an annoying mosquito bite.

I almost feel weird mentioning this next bit because you would not understand what I mean unless and until you have it done for yourself, but it almost feels like it crunches when it goes in. Like the way your teeth feel biting into a chip? It doesn't hurt, that is just the only way I know how to describe it.

Some people bleed a little, some don't. I am a little bit of a bleeder. No big deal. Shari just applied some pressure. I hope this doesn't make anyone pass out! SO worth a little bit of blood to rid myself of these gross lines.

Let's get rid of those forehead lines!

After the BOTOX® treatment was done we had a bit of JUVÉDERM® left, so Shari talked me into putting a tiny little pout in my lips. I will not lie, this hurt a bit. The reason for this is that our lips have many, many more nerve endings. I have a high tolerance for pain, and luckily JUVÉDERM® has a numbing agent in it to help ease this pain. The pain only lasted as while she was injecting, with just a mild sensitivity for the next day or so.

A little bit of blood.

My cute little pout is complete! I LOVE IT. Oh my goodness I love it. JUVÉDERM® lasts anywhere from 6 months to a year, and longer the more treatments you have.

Love cute little Shari! Thank you SO much!

Now, all of you have been wondering, "Yes it is awesome, but HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?!" There is no straight forward answer since everyone is different, everyone's needs and desires will be different. Remember I mentioned I have strong facial muscles? You may not. Your best bet will be to call Elase, and schedule a free consulation.

Plans however, start at $69 a month.

Here I am 20 minutes after my appointment. The redness is gone, and as you can see no bruising, or signs that I had anything done, other than my AMAZING lips.

Come back next Monday to see my results. I PROMISE you won't want to miss it. Rumor has it I may be giving away some BOTOX® love.

I just had my fourth laser hair treatment at Elase Medical Spa. I am happy to report that I remembered my Dr. Numb. Holy cow it was so NOT painful this time. This post, I want to talk a little about results.

I get asked wherever I go, "How is the laser hair treatments going?!" People really want to know and I am happy to tell them, "AMAZING!" I wish so much I would have done this YEARS ago. I love it, my husband loves it, it is just...wow.

I have seen what I would consider a 75% decrease in hair growth. Basically the only hair I have left are the lighter brown, blonde and *cough*cough*gray*cough*cough* hair left. This is what I understand about laser hair removal: The darker the hair, the better the results.

I can tell you right now, if I stopped my laser hair removal now, I would be completely satisfied. It is SO much easier to take care of my bikini area now, and I can't say enough good things about it. However, that being said I have two more treatments scheduled and I am considering extending to the full treatment schedule. Treatments truly are that amazing and I am confident I could have an 80-90% decrease if I continue.

Curious? Call Elase for your free consultation. 1-801-495-2737 Feeling shy? Schedule online!***Disclaimer: For the next few
months I will be blogging about my experience with Elase Medical Spas.
While I am receiving treatments in return for my opinion about my
experience, please be assured they are my own and I have chosen to be
very choosy about the things I share with my readers, and any and all
opinions I have about Elase and my experiences will be my own. I have
chosen to work with Elase because I believe it can benefit so many of us
who may be curious about a medical spa but may not feel comfortable
approaching one on their own. I hope to change those feelings. Let's
take care of ourselves and treat ourselves!***

I had the opportunity to attend the first ever Click Retreat sponsored by Southwest Airlines.

Southwest Airlines was SO. GENEROUS. and provided all of the attendees flights to and home from the retreat. Can you believe that?

As part of the retreat we had the opportunity to participate in a photo scavenger hunt. This was my first time participating and I was so excited for the opportunity to stretch my photography, and imagination. Even better? They are giving two winners a pair of round trip tickets to fly anywhere Southwest/Air Tran flies. Wha?

Onto the Photo Scavenger Hunt:

Sometimes kids cry on a session, and that is okay. Sometimes they don't look at the camera, and that is okay too. Sometimes we have to let go of what the world views as perfect, and create our own perfect.

View the entire session and order prints here.

If you are interested in having me photograph your family or child in a similar
way, drop me a line: kimorlandini@gmail.com. I would love to chat with

After the heavy of yesterday, I think it is time to lighten things up with one of my favorite past times, quilting.

Remember part 1 of Camilla's quilt? Well, I finished it, almost a year ago, but I never got around to blogging the second part, so here it goes.

After ironing all of those crazy circles, it was time to stack them into their respective cool and warm stacks.

(Did you know that I am basically colorblind? Well, it is no easy feat for me to make stacks of different colors, but I succeeded!)

My "warm" stack:

My "cool" stack:

Each stack had a different backing. The warm stack had a cream backing, while the cool stack had a pink gingham stack. I LOVE Riley Blake for this reason. Great core colors and fabrics. I love going a little "Gingham Style" too.

Now for the tough part, choosing alternating warm and cool fabrics and laying them out so that none of the same fabric touches on the finished quilt. Whoosh. My least favorite part of quilting. So. Stressful.

Once I had the fabrics laid out, I stacked them back up in their alternating warm and cool circles. All the while reminding myself to keep them straight!

Here is the underside of my stack:

It is pinning time, and I am not talking about Pinterest! Pinning all four corners of the square is a MUST. These circles are thick and like to shift under the presser foot. Pin the backside of the circles together.

Sew along one line. (LOVE that this quilt let's you draw in sewing lines. While this quilt can be tedious, almost anyone can make one!)

Presto! Our first two circles are sewn together.

Open out the backside circle portion.

Pin. Again, I repeat, PIN! The bulky fabric will shift.

Then sew along the rounded edges.

As you can see, I am not the world's most perfect quilter and I will NEVER win an award or a blue ribbon for my straight lines and beautifully matching edges...but that is okay. I gave up being perfect a long time ago.

Continue along, sewing the rest of the strip in the same manner.

Once the strip is finished, lay it out on the previous strip, backsides facing one another.

Then? Pinny McPinalot. Pin. Pin. Pin.

Then? Pin some more!

Now, sew along the long seam, being very careful to make sure your seam sewn between the circle edges. You don't want to end up with any holes when you are done.

When the long seam is sewn, open out the backside portions of the circles and pin, pin, pin again.

Then sew along the curved lines. This part may make you wish for death, or Hulk strength arms. Either way, repeat to yourself, "I can do this!". The quilt gets VERY heavy as you go on, and very bulky. If you do it right though, you can keep most of the bulk on your sewing table.

I prefer to sew these curves in a "snake like" manner, or an S shape going down the line. This makes it so you can keep the less bulky end of your quilt under your machine. I wish I had a better way to explain this but I don't.

I sew one line of curves, and then go back to the top of the curves and sew the rest of the round edges.

This quilt is SO fun to sew because you get to watch it come alive one row at a time, you don't have to wait until you are all finished to see the end result.

Now is the time to finish your edges. You could choose to keep them "scalloped" just make sure your edge pieces do not have any pen marks or cut marks from turning the circles inside out.

I prefer my edges finished.

Turn over your edges and pin.

Finish sewing the curves.

Here is the finished edging. Clip threads and you are done!

Here is the final product on the bed!

I love the back almost as much as the front! You can see the circle quilting through the back. Gah. ADORE!

Finally, the front! This quilt is so bright and fun and puts a smile on my face every time I see it!

This quilt ended up being king size, about 82"x82" and weighs over 10.5 lbs. It. Is. Heavy...and cost a lot to make. Whoosh. I am certain I will not be making another anytime soon.

What am I working on next? Well, another quilt that involves circles, robots, orange and teal. Some of my favorite things. I will share when I am done.

xoxo

This morning I board a plane that will fly me to a beautiful place. A place I have wanted to visit for the past few years of my life. This trip was last minute and kind of just fell into my lap as an answer to prayers, and desperation. I owe a huge thank you to Casey, and mostly to Shelley, and of course a thank you to Today's Mama for making this all possible. I feel so blessed to be able to fly to North Carolina to The Outerbanks to attend the Click Blogger Retreat.

As part of this retreat/conference MeRa Koh asked us to take portraits of ourselves.

This. Was. Hard.

It was at times, horrific.

It was extremely painful.

This is what I ended up with:

So many emotions flooded through me as I took photos of myself. I took smiling ones, laughing ones, serious ones, and it came down to this one. Somewhat sad, and pain-filled.

I hate that I am still sad and full of pain at times. It is something I try so hard to push back and not let eat away at me, but that part of me is so very real, and gnawing all at once. Some days this pain keeps me in my bed, or on the couch hiding under a blanket, because I am anxious that it is winning.

Currently it stems from the last two and a half horrible years of struggle and triumph. Some of it comes from a deep desire to continue on a path that I cannot go down alone, a path that both frustrates me and angers me and eats away at me almost every single day of my life.

Sometimes I wonder what it is like to live without extreme marriage difficulties, or depression, or anxiety. Sometimes I wonder how I would feel with a different life. It is, of course, always easier to see the grass greener on the other side, but then again, sometimes I get sick of throwing the horse shit onto my grass hoping it is going to get greener eventually. Guess what? Shit stinks. I am knee deep in it, and that is rough.

What if I never had to feel the pain of losing a pregnancy?
Or a child I was a foster mother to?
What if my marriage never tipped the scale toward a divorce?
What if I had an amazing metabolism?
What if my husband wanted another child as much as I desperately want one each and every single day of my life?

I know, I know I should be over all of it, some days I am just not. The emotions that were brought up while taking this photo were amazingly difficult. The emotions are not all bad though. They are cleansing and I am working my way through them. Slowly.

Thanks MeRa Koh.

I think.

My after photos were taken (by my 9 year old, sorry they are a little blurry.) 8 days after my treatment.

Everything Shari told me to expect happened. My forehead felt "heavy" for the entire week. I would find myself purposefully trying to move my forehead to see if it would wrinkle, and it wouldn't! These were the only side effects I had. As you can see, the results were amazing and yet subtle. I could still express myself through facial expressions, but the wrinkling was dramatically decreased.

I understand Botox lasts around 4 months time. Would I do have Botox again? ABSOLUTELY! As I mentioned in my previous post, it is virtually painless. At least it was for me. So painless in fact I can't quite find something to compare the miniscule amount of pain that I had.

One thing that I learned? Botox can help PREVENT wrinkles from forming. Say what? I always thought Botox was for 'old' ladies, I could not have been further from the truth. How amazing is it to have a product on the market that can prevent you from ever having to suffer from wrinkling? How lovely to keep your younger skin looking young before it has a chance to be scarred with wrinkles and lines? I am impressed and amazed and my mind is forever changed.

Check out Elase Medical Spa's website for more information on membership fees for Botox and their other amazing services!

***Disclaimer: For the next few
months I will be blogging about my experience with Elase Medical Spas.

Family Photograph Season

I love the Bocchino family. I have known them for *cough*20 years*cough*. (I never thought in a million years I could say I have known someone for 20 years!) I adore them, and aren't they gorgeous? The parents look like they are 20, not like they have two teenagers.

I love a chance to marry the two.

Diamond Cutting, LLC. of Utah recently hired me to document their die making process, and to photograph some items for their website. Die making is seriously fascinating. I could watch it all day.

The documentary photography was photographed on location using Kodak Portra 400, while the products were photographed in my studio and then cut out using Photoshop to create the brilliant white background.

A collection of dies.

Many types of dies are cut using a modified letterpress machine and are done by hand. This machine was amazing and I may have wanted to run away with it. Maybe if it wasn't so heavy.

Handmade dies. The boards are cut using a laser cutter, and the die blades are cut by hand and hammered into place. A long and amazing process.

It is so nice to finally feel like I am back in the game of life. For the past two, almost three years I have been working from 1-6 hours from home each day. I made the decision in July to quit my very amazing job doing graphic design work. I came to the conclusion that I needed to focus more of my energy in a few places instead of feeling so spread out into every direction. While I am still catching up from so many months of being unorganized both in my physical life as well as my virtual one, I feel so much lighter and more excited to blog about my life...and the things I am currently focusing on that make me who I am! One of those things?

Spotted Owl Soap.

In February of this year The R House Couture purchased it's second sister company (More on its first another time.), Spotted Owl Soap. We purchased Spotted Owl from the founder Holly Reed, who after a trip to Europe, discovered that soap didn't have to smell and feel like, well, soap!

I met Holly in 2006 when we started working together doing photography and other graphic design work. We became fast friends and I was lucky enough to be her friend when she founded Spotted Owl Soap. I had never used handmade or homemade body products before. So, in 2008 I became hooked on handmade soap, and to Spotted Owl. That fall I gave away soaps to all of my neighbors and friends. Delightful.

When the company went up for sale earlier this year, it was easy to talk my business partners, Lindsey Redfern and Leisha Kelsey into buying it, I had, after all, gotten them hooked on the yummy products as well.

So, the last nine months have consisted of hours in the workshop formulating our scents and nailing our branding down to bring Spotted Owl what it is today. So many hours have been spent in the studio creating fun photographs for our products. (I am so lucky that photography is one of the jobs I have the privilege of doing.

Here are just a handful of some of the products we offer, and some of my favorites as well:

Wow, that has always been a word that strikes great curiosity in my mind. Over the last few years I have seen women I adore get Botox with amazing results.

Finally it was my time. I was a little nervous, but mostly anxious with excitement. I met with the gorgeous Shari Wroblewski, RN, BSN. See what I mean?

I love Shari, and would love to look just like her! Shari put me COMPLETELY at ease and talked me through what I hoped to achieve with my first Botox treatment. I told Shari I wanted the results to be subtle enough that not everyone would think, "Oh my did she just get Botox?", but I wanted to see enough results to have people notice I looked different in a good way.

We decided for this first treatment to focus on my forehead, where I noticed I was starting to get more and more wrinkles. We determined that many of these probably came from sun exposure. (Wear your sunscreen!) We focused on the area where my side swept bangs did not cover, and where the most wrinkles were.

Botox, for me, was painless! Shari explained how things would feel over the next few days and weeks, and what to look for in terms of results. The visit was fast and over quickly. One thing I learned is that Botox is affordable, and Elase has a plan to fit your budget.

Come back next week to see my results, and we'll talk about how long Botox lasts, if I love it, and if I will be doing it again.
With good reason too because Vive is quite an amazing program, and I was so thrilled when Elase offered me a free week of the Vive program just so that I could tell you about it. How amazing is that?

You all know that I struggle with my weight. It goes up and down and up and down and generally up again. While I know this is part psychological and mostly physical, it drives me crazy, and the opportunity to have a coach work with me through all of the ups and downs sounded like an amazing idea.
Here are some of the things you get when you sign up for Vive. You get a Blender Bottle, a bottle of oil, two bags of MRP (Meal Replacement Protocol shakes) and some Real Salt.

Then you get a little blood test that measures your cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

And of course, my favorite part of any weight loss, you get weighed and measured.

What I like about Elase is that they have the InBody 520 in office. The InBody is more than just a scale, it is a really awesome scale that measures not only total body weight, but breaks that weight down into lean body mass, body fat mass, intra and extracellular water, your BMI (which we know kind of sucks for everyone), your percentage of body fat, and a segmental lean analysis which helps determine the ratio of muscle on different parts of your body.

Uhm? AMAZING! They do this EVERY WEEK when you weigh in. This helps to pinpoint the areas you are losing weight, whether it is muscle, fat or water...and if you are gaining in these areas as well.

The program consists of daily exercise routines, drinking 3 WIO Meal Replacement Protocol shakes (The shakes are pretty good, and you get to add 4 ounces of a low
carbohydrate shake into them. This makes them creamy. You also have the
choice to add flavor supplements to change up the shake flavors a bit.
My favorite is peanut butter. I highly recommend the chocolate shakes, I
did not like the vanilla MRP at all), and a healthy meal consisting of protein and healthy vegetables. After a few weeks Smart Foods are brought into your diet like yummy muffins, and my favorite, ham, egg, and cheese croissants.

My first week results were as follows:

-1.3 lbs
-.5" neck
-.75" bicep

-.25" shoulders
-1.5" chest
-1.25" belly button
-.5" waist
-.5" thigh

These are some pretty impressive inch loss numbers.

I enjoyed the results of my first week so much that I signed up for the full program and extended a month. Normally Vive is a 20 week medical weight loss program, but you can extend the program to fit your weight loss needs. You learn how to add healthy foods back into your daily routine and life lessons to keep you on track.

Come back in a few weeks when I give you the entire weight loss breakdown and my final thoughts on the Vive Medical Weight Loss program from Elase Medical Spa.

***This post was originally posted over at my lovely friend +Emily Hill's adorable blog, is this REALLY my life? , and I am so excited to share it with you today!***

Back to school always reminds me that fall is fast approaching, and with fall comes some of my favorite things. Layers, long sleeves, crisp air, and family photos.

I began taking photos professionally when my son was a little boy. I quickly learned what looked amazing in photos and what left people looking less than desirable. Clients ask me all the time, "What do you suggest we wear for family photos?" To which I have an easy answer which I can break down into four basic parts:

1. Coordinate: Perhaps one of the most important "rules" when it comes to choosing outfits for family photos is to remember to coordinate. I can almost guarantee that you will look a million times more awesome if everyone in your photo is coordinated and NOT matching. Long, long gone are the days of everyone wearing white polo shirts and khaki pants. (Yuck.) Coordinating allows individuality and more color into the photo which will look a lot more amazing on your wall than bright whites and khakis which will do nothing for you but wash you out and distract from who you are. Dressing this way will not take away from the most important subject of the photos: You. Your clothes will compliment you and not steal the show. I promise.

2. Prints and Solids: My recipe for choosing clothing for photo sessions, and I have done this since my first child was born, is to put one person in a print, and then coordinate everyone else around that print.

Usually I will decide on the person who will be wearing the print and then pull colors out of that print for everyone else to wear. Doing this gives you a lot of options to add colors that will be flattering on different skin tones and hair or eye color. This way, no one is stuck wearing something that makes them look and feel awful about themselves.

This year I was actually inspired by my youngest daughter's dress which is a teal green color. This was a bit opposite of what I normally do and required me to find a print with this color in it.

Dress: Walmart

Shoes: Gap

Belt: Thistles Boutique
Earrings: Forever 21

It just so happened that I was photographing a family the same week I fell in love with Camilla's teal dress. My good friend Kristina was wearing this amazing hummingbird dress with a blue cardigan and a cute coral belt and earrings. I texted her and begged her to let me copy her outfit for my family photos. She obliged and I owe her a million.

Dress: eShakti
Cardigan: Downeast Basics
Heels: Forever Young Shoes
Belt and Earrings: Target

Once the print was chosen I was able to pull navy and coral out for my older daughter.
I coordinated my son's outfit with his little sister's dress by putting him in teal jeans. He coordinates with his dad through his burgundy shirt and the gray in his sweater, and I pull the blue from his sweater to coordinate with me and his sister.
Finally, I coordinated my husband with my son's outfit by putting him in a burgundy cardigan and pulled out some of the brown from my dress to coordinate with what I was wearing.

Shirt, Cardigan, Pants: H&M

Shoes: Brazil

3. Layer: Here you can see all of our outfits together. Layers are flattering and can often hide "flaws" we may feel that we have. A cardigan will cover extra cleavage or flabby arms, or hide a bit of post pregnancy weight. Layering looks very nice in photos and allows an extra level of coordinating options.

4. Accessorize: By accessorizing you can put the finishing touch on your photos. Just like layering helps us hide our flaws, a great statement necklace can bring the eye to your face, or a great pair of heels can give your calves a little bit of extra umph and elongation to your legs, a very feminine touch. Add a little headband to your girls, and if their ears are pierced choose a pretty pair of earrings to help coordinate with their outfit or someone else's. Other ideas to accessorize? A great watch on your hubby, a pretty belt to cinch in that waist (I promise you will look 10 lbs slimmer), or a great scarf.

Most important? Have fun! Remember to chill out and relax. A stressed out, yelling mama doesn't make anyone happy. Promise your man a delicious dinner (and dessert *wink*) as a reward for his good attitude and cooperation. Promise your kids an extra song and book at bedtime for their smiley faces during photo time.

Remember to be the real you. Love on your kids, tickle them, and squish them, most importantly, remember that they are kids. They might cry...embrace it. They might not smile, so what? Remember that this time is the time you want to take to capture the real them, the real you, not the "look at the camera and say 'Cheese!'" them. Kiss your man passionately, take family photo time as a way to remember how much you loved one another the day you got married.

Think happy thoughts and your love and happiness will shine right through into your photos.

No, really. She is an angel and to top off her angelic nature? She teaches 3rd grade. She is the most patient woman I have ever met, never complains and teaches me so much about patience and love and simply? She makes me a better person. It is no wonder I would do anything for her.

This year she has taken on the gigantic task of teaching a 3rd/4th grade split class. She came up with an amazing idea to draw "magic" into her classroom theme for the year. Really wanting to mix things up a bit since some of her class from last year will be returning to her class again as 4th graders, she wanted to make sure they have a fun and different experience. (See? Amazing.)

I had the task of brain storming with her. She had so many wonderful ideas...she is super creative like that. My creativity lies in taking an idea and then making it happen.

My job? Find inexpensive Harry Potter-like glasses in bulk. Which I did! They arrive the day before school starts (because I have awesome timing like that.) Second? Cut some vinyl on my Cricut Mini for her classroom door with the saying, "Magic is believing in yourself. When you do that, anything can happen." Third? Find "magic wands" for each of her students.

The first two tasks were simple. The third? Not so easy. We discussed making wands for their dry erase boards...kind of a tough one. So we decided that pencils would be a good option for them to use when learning new facts, etc. (Not an everyday use.) So I searched online for wand pencils...yeah they don't exist, or if they do they are CHEESE city. So I told Lorraine (my beautiful step-mom) that I could make her some. I did a little Googling and found a few tutorials of differing "Wand Pencils" and "Harry Potter Wand Pencils". I decided to just get inspired by some of the ideas, tweak them to my own vision, and this is what I came up with.

A quick trip to Office Max and Michael's, and a quick rummage through my recycle bin got me everything I needed.

For this Harry Potter Wand Pencil tutorial you will need the following:

An empty box.
An old pencil.

Hot glue gun.

Glue sticks.

New pencils.

Average sized marbles.

Spray paint.

Begin by taking your old pencil and poking holes into your empty box. (I also used this time as therapy since I haven't been eating things like these delicious Drumsticks. Isn't the chocolate in the bottom of the cone the best part?)

Now comes the hot glue part. For this you will need to have the glue sticks, pencils and marbles handy as it is kind of a quick process.

But before you begin, you must stop and take photos of your favorite black kitty. Every good wizard must have one.

Mine has a polka dot tail. Be jealous.

(It is really difficult to show you a two handed process with only one hand as I take a picture. Yikes.)

Begin adding hot glue about 1/4 of the way up the pencil.

I found holding the pencil by the tip to be most helpful as I could
rotate it around with my left hand as I glued with my right. Leaving
space at the writing end allows you to avoid being burned by the glue
and also allows you to build up the glue into more of the Harry
Potter-like wand shape.

This step is completely random, the more random the better, and the more distressed and wood-like it will look. As I got to the top of the pencil I added a little more glue to make the wand thicker at the top, so that it would blend better with the next step, my favorite part: the marble.

I added quite the gob of hot glue to the eraser portion of the pencil. I wanted to create kind of a drippy effect on the top of the pencil.

Add the marble and a little more hot glue and hold upside down until the glue sets up enough not to 'drip' anymore. You want to add enough glue that it will hold the glass marble in place. I am still not positive how well the marble will hold up, but I have tossed the pencils and wands around a lot and haven't lost any yet. However, I did buy some super glue to have on hand just in case.

Once the glue was set enough, I placed the pencils into my cardboard box to cool and set completely. Only once did I space it and set a pencil down on my work surface. (No one wants that wand, promise.)

I then took the pencils outside where they came to life. I gave them ample space on my work surface to give them a good coat of spray paint.

I went with a Krylon satin finish paint. I love this spray paint, and it comes in so many beautiful colors and finishes. I am like a kid in a candy store. This time the color was plain old boring brown...but that is what color Harry's wand is right? I liked that the satin finish left a closer to wood look than a gloss would have.

This is when my man got in on the action. I think he saw me having too much fun, so I obliged and let him paint away.

I let the wands dry for about an hour. They looked like chocolate when they were wet.

I thought it might look cool to distress the marbles with sand paper to get the paint off, I got about three done and decided that looked super dumb, so I quit that idea since I loved the entire wand brown. However, you can see in the photo that the paint over the marble looks kind of shimmery and still magical.

I chose to buy pre-sharpened pencils because I did not want to sharpen them after the entire process, but the lead had been coated with spray paint. I just ran each pencil lightly over some sand paper and voila...it writes perfectly.

What an exciting way to welcome these children into the new school year. A magical year it will be.

When I posted about my first visit my dear friend Laura said she did all of her laser hair removal without the 'wussy cream'. I laughed and thought she probably knew best because she completed 18 months of treatment, what I am not so sure about is where on her body she had hers done.

I haven't been uh...too upfront in details about where and how much I am having done on my lady bits. If I tell you I am doing the full Brazilian and I don't mean Flavio, do you get it? Uhm, TMI, but you must know for purposes of this post.

Yesterday, in the rush to get out of the house and to get my kids where they needed to go, I forgot to put on my Dr. Numb. I channeled Laura's words, "I didn't use that wussy cream!" I was doing fine until I got in and saw Mary Kate's smiling face. Things started out fine.

Then. Oh. My. Word.

Friends, it hurt.

Bad.

These lady bits are sensitive!

I almost cried.

I may have cried.

I am not sure.

Mary Kate was so awesome. She stopped for me a few times as I basically did Lamaze through the entire treatment. I praised her quickness and efficiency in putting my misery to an end. Never again will I leave home without the good Dr. Numb.

***Disclaimer: For the next few
months I will be blogging about my experience with Elase Medical Spas.
While I am receiving treatments in return for my opinion about my

opinions I have about Elase and my experiences will be my own. I have
chosen to work with Elase because I believe it can benefit so many of us
who may be curious about a medical spa but may not feel comfortable
approaching one on their own. I hope to change those feelings. Let's
